Not-for-Profit Health Insurance

We’re a not-for-profit health fund, which means our members come first. Everything we do, we do for our community.

What is not-for-profit health insurance?

Unlike for-profit funds, not-for-profit health insurance means any profit we make at GMHBA gets reinvested back into our members, our services, our team and our community. We don’t have shareholders or overseas investors, so we’re not obliged to chase endless growth. Truth be told, we’re more interested in supporting the health of our members. That’s what private health insurance is for.

Why choose GMHBA?

Award-winning health insurance

Trophies aren’t everything, but they’re sure nice to have. In 2023, GMHBA won Canstar’s Outstanding Value Hospital Cover – Health Insurer: VIC, QLD and NT award.

Return of claims savings

GMHBA set aside funds to pay for claims that had to be postponed during COVID-19 for future member treatments. Not all claims that we planned for were made, so we're returning value to our members in a number of ways.

At your service

Personal, attentive service. That’s something that really sets GMHBA apart. Whether it’s in-branch or over the phone, our Geelong-based contact centre team is always there for you.

We’re part of the Australian Health Service Alliance

The Australian Health Services Alliance represents a number of private health insurance funds, including us. This means GMHBA can usually get better financial agreements with private hospitals, and access to an improved medical gap scheme. Both of these can help reduce our members’ out-of-pocket expenses.

Our mission: The GMHBA Way

Our values are the reason we get out of bed in the morning. They inform everything we do: from the services we offer to the community programs we support.

Striving for better

We’ll never stop trying to achieve more for our members.

A true community health fund

As a non-profit health fund, being community-minded comes with the territory. GMHBA has a proud tradition of supporting our local community, through events, health webinars, partnerships and employee engagement programs.

Partnerships

We partner with groups like The Resilience Project and Read the Play to support the health of our community.

Volunteering

GMHBA employees get one day of paid volunteer leave per year. It’s just another way we’re giving back.

We’re for Geelong

GMHBA was born and bred in Geelong. From our humble beginnings in 1934, we’ve grown to become one of Australia’s leading regionally-based health insurers. In other words, we’re more than just a health fund – we’re part of the community. And through our sponsorships, health events and volunteering, we try and give back wherever we can.

Frequently asked questions about not-for-profit health insurance

Not-for-profit health insurance means private health insurance run for members, not shareholders. Instead of trying to create profit from our premiums, GMHBA returns value back to our members and the local community. It’s how we’re able to offer competitive premiums and services, and great value health insurance.

Healthcare in Australia is provided by two systems that complement each other: public and private. Healthcare accessed through the public system is funded by the federal government through Medicare (ultimately by taxpayers). Services accessed through the private system are funded by a mix of government and individuals (including health insurance funds). Your private health premiums go towards these services and benefits.
